Language is the medium by which a person communicates his thoughts and feelings to his fellow men. It is considered as the most important function of the human body. About half of the world's population speaks the 13 most populous languages. Here is the list summarizes of top 10, the most important languages of the world in use today. 1 - Mandarin
Mandarin claims over 955 million speakers, stands at the top spot considered as the most common language of the world. It is the official language of China and Taiwan, and one of the four official dialects of Singapore. About 14.4% of the population of the world is native speakers of Mandarin language.

2 - Spanish
Spanish’s prominence in the Americas and in Europe makes it one of the most common languages, with 405 million speakers. Andalusian and Catalan also speaks Spanish. Spanish is spoken in South American and Central American country. There is a particular interest in Spanish in the U.S because many English words are borrowed from the Spanish language.

3 - English
English language is spoken by more than 360 million people. It is the second most common language of the world, first language in U.K and the U.S and the former British Empire while its speakers hail from all around the world, like New Zealand, Australia, Zimbabwe, the Caribbean, Hong Kong, South Africa, and Canada. It is the official language of more countries than any other language.
4 - Urdu/Hindi
Over 310 million people speak Urdu/Hindi in Pakistan/India. They have different written forms, Hindi and Urdu share a history, many common words, and a grammar. Many linguists consider them different register of the same common language.

5 - Arabic
The Arabic language is spoken by 295 million speakers worldwide. It is also the language of Muslim holy writings. It has also influenced other most common languages as Spanish has about 4,000 words with Arabic roots.
6 - Portuguese
About 215 million people speaks Portuguese language worldwide, nearly 150 million of them speak Brazilian Portuguese. Portuguese is the official language of Angola, Mozambique, and Portugal.
7 - Bengali
Bengali language is spoken by 205 million people of India and Bangladesh. It is the second most widely spoken language in India mostly popular in the easternmost states. Bengali is also an official language of India and Bangladesh.
8 - Russian
Russian language is the world’s eight most common language having 155 million speakers. Russian language is also spoken in Belarus, Kazakhstan, and the U.S and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations, along with Arabic, Chinese, English, French and Spanish.
9 - Japanese
Out of the 125 million people who speak Japanese, 124 million live in Japan and the island group of Okinawa. This makes it unusual among the most common languages in its geographic concentration.

10 - Punjabi

Punjabi is the 10th most widely spoken language in the world. Punjabi is an Indo Aryan language spoken by 102 million speakers worldwide. It is mainly spoken in Pakistan and Western India. It is a native language of 1.44% of the world’s population.
