HISTORY REVIEW – KARACHI MONSOON IN 1994
During last 20 to 25 years Karachi witnessed variety of Monsoon seasons with sometimes very little or no rain in the season during July to September like 1987, 1991, 1993, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2004 – where in few years the city received some of quite heavy rains that include 1988, 1992, 1994, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and the most recently 2017. (1989, 1990, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005, 2008 & 2016 also had some good rains but overall those were below or near average rainfall) But apart from all years 1994 was an ‘exceptional’ or a very very special Monsoon season in Karachi, the wettest and the most memorable in my life. At the start of that season it was quite humid i.e in the last week of June and first shower with winds occurred on 30th June evening where first proper rain hit on 2nd July. City continued to receive good rains caused by systems mostly coming from the Bay of Bengal to Sindh till 17th July including days like July 4, 5, 10, 16 & 17 with heavy falls. After that it remained mostly cloudy with drizzle at times till July 31.
Right from the start of August, rain systems again started to approach and affect Sindh that continued with breaks in the whole month of including heavy rainy days like 2, 3, 20 & 28th August and even the first week of September was very wet in Sindh including Karachi when the city received nearly 100 mm rain in 5 days of that week.
During that Monsoon season ’94 Karachi and many parts of Sindh were largely affected by over 2 months of heavy rainfalls especially the power, water & sewage systems were badly hit in Karachi.
Total Rain Amount in Monsoon 1994 (at Nazimabad No. 5):
By calculating all the days’ rain amount (of my area) very carefully, the total rainfall amount during the season in my area is 582 mm. The official or PMD/Airport amount is reported to be about 467 mm (some sources even differ that figure also) however as per my diary there have been many days when I did not find any rain amount from news sources at that time which were mostly the official TV news, local Radio news and following days’ newspaper.
For all our weather fans I request to kindly obsolete/supersede my previous data file of “Monsoon Rains during 1994 in Karachi” (with given total of 545 mm) that was published in an article on a weather portal in August, 2012. I do sorry for that, though correction made quite late but being a serious and interested weather data lover it is very necessary to be corrected not only for Data History but also for our new & future weather loving generations.
